Four Days, Four Very Different Pets (and Why I Love What I Do)
One of the things I love most about pet care is that no two households are ever the same. This week was a perfect example of that.
While their humans headed off to Florida for a wedding, I had the privilege of looking after a small but wonderfully varied crew: Benji the dog, Dasher, the cat, a chameleon called Lizza, and a fish. For four days, I stopped by twice a day, making sure everyone was fed, comfortable, calm, and cared for in their own familiar space.
And honestly? It was a joy.
Meet Benji š¾
Benji is one of those dogs who just quietly steals your heart.
Heās gentle, expressive, and very aware of whatās going on around him. Each visit, heād be waiting ā sometimes patiently, sometimes with a hopeful look that said, āIs it walk time yet?ā We settled into a rhythm quickly: food, potty breaks, a little companionship, and just being present together.
Dogs like Benji are a big reason why I believe in in-home care. He didnāt have to adjust to a kennel, strange noises, or unfamiliar routines. He got to stay exactly where he feels safe ā his home ā and just add a friendly, consistent face to his day.
A Cat on Their Own Terms š
As any cat person knows, cats donāt want to be āmanagedā⦠they want to be respected.
This kitty was no exception. Some visits were all about quiet company, gentle check-ins, food, water, and a clean litter box. Other times, Iād get a curious look or a slow blink of approval. No pressure. No forced interaction. Just letting them set the tone.
Thatās always my approach with cats: calm, observant, and patient.
The Dragon (Yes, Really) š¦
Not every pet greets you at the door ā and thatās okay.
Lizza, the bearded dragon was a reminder that good pet care isnāt always about cuddles. Itās about attention to detail: temperatures, lighting, food, and making sure everything is just right in their environment.
Reptiles are sensitive, and consistency matters. I made sure nothing was rushed and nothing was overlooked.
And the Fish š
Fish might be small, but they still need reliable care.
Clean water, proper feeding, and a quick visual check each visit to make sure everything looked healthy. Itās easy to underestimate fish care ā but when youāre entrusted with someoneās home and animals, every life matters.
Why This Matters to Me
Iāve traveled extensively myself, and I know how hard it can be to leave your pets behind ā especially when boarding isnāt a good fit. I also have an elderly Australian Shepherd and two cats of my own, so I deeply understand how important it is for pets to stay in familiar surroundings whenever possible.
This kind of visit; multiple species, different needs, twice-daily care, is exactly why I started Willow Home Pet Care.
Itās not just about feeding schedules.
Itās about noticing.
Itās about consistency.
Itās about trust.
And itās about making sure that when pet parents are away celebrating, traveling, or simply living their lives, they can do so with peace of mind knowing their animals are genuinely cared for.
Four days, four very different pets⦠and a whole lot of quiet moments that reminded me why I love this work.
